APA guidelines recognize the potential impact of antipsychotic treatment on weight.21

Regular measurement of weight and body mass index (BMI) is recommended.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): The proportion of patients meeting a weight gain criterion of ≥7% of baseline body weight was 5% with adjunctive ABILIFY compared to 1% with adjunctive placebo.5,6

Low Mean Weight Change at Week 6

Bipolar I Disorder: The percentage of patients meeting the weight gain criterion of ≥7% of baseline body weight was 13% for ABILIFY (7/56) and 0% for placebo (0/60). Of the 7 ABILIFY-treated patients with clinically significant weight gain, 1 had a BMI of <23, 2 had a BMI of 23 to 27, and 4 had a BMI of >27.14

Schizophrenia: In a 52-week Schizophrenia trial, the percentage of patients with ≥7% increase in baseline body weight was 30% for those with BMI <23, 19% for those with BMI 23 to 27, and 8% for those with BMI >27.15,22
