Efficacy in Pediatric Bipolar I Disorder (10 to 17 years), Manic or Mixed Episodes

ABILIFY® (aripiprazole) is indicated for:

  • Acute and maintenance treatment of manic and mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder in pediatric patients 10 to 17 years of age as part of a total treatment program
  • Adjunctive therapy to either lithium or valproate for the acute treatment of manic and mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder in pediatric patients 10 to 17 years of age as part of a total treatment program

Study design

  • Two fixed doses of ABILIFY (10 mg/day or 30 mg/day) were evaluated in a 4-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) (N=296) with Bipolar Mania
  • In this study the starting daily dose of ABILIFY was 2 mg/day and subsequently titrated to 10 mg/day in 5 days or 30 mg/day in 13 days
  • The primary outcome was improvement from baseline in Y-MRS Total Score at Week 4
Mean Change in Y-MRS Total Score from baseline At week 4
  • This study was not designed to compare the 10-mg/day and 30-mg/day treatment arms.

Maintenance therapy

  • The efficacy of ABILIFY for the maintenance treatment of Schizophrenia or Bipolar I Disorder in the pediatric population has not been evaluated
  • While there is no body of evidence available to answer the question of how long the pediatric patient treated with ABILIFY should be maintained, maintenance efficacy can be extrapolated from adult data along with comparisons of aripiprazole pharmacokinetic parameters in adult and pediatric patients
  • It is generally recommended that responding patients be continued beyond the acute response, but at the lowest dose needed to maintain remission. Patients should be periodically reassessed to determine the need for maintenance treatment
