Common Side Effects
Children and adolescents might be more sensitive than adults in developing antipsychotic-related adverse events.
Common Adverse Reactions with ABILIFY in
Adolescent Patients (13 to 17 years) with Schizophrenia
Percentage of patients reporting reaction*
| Event |
ABILIFY (n=202) |
Placebo (n=100) |
|---|---|---|
|
Extrapyramidal Disorder |
17 | 5 |
| Somnolence | 16 | 6 |
| Tremor | 7 | 2 |
*Adverse reactions ≥5% incidence and at least twice the rate of placebo from one
6-week placebo-controlled trial with oral ABILIFY in
doses ranging from 2 mg/day
to 30 mg/day.
Three common adverse reactions appeared to have a possible dose-response relationship:
- Extrapyramidal disorder (ABILIFY 10 mg 13%; ABILIFY 30 mg 22%; placebo 5%)
- Somnolence (ABILIFY 10 mg 11%; ABILIFY 30 mg 22%; placebo 6%)
- Tremor (ABILIFY 10 mg 2%; ABILIFY 30 mg 12%; placebo 2%)
There was a low rate of discontinuation due to adverse reactions (ABILIFY 5%, placebo 2%).
Important Warnings and Precautions
- The risk of developing tardive dyskinesia (TD) and the potential for it to become irreversible may increase as the duration of treatment and the total cumulative dose increase. Prescribing should be consistent with the need to minimize TD. If signs and symptoms appear, discontinuation should be considered since TD may remit, partially or completely.
- Like other antipsychotics, ABILIFY may have the potential to impair judgment, thinking, or motor skills. Patients should not drive or operate hazardous machinery until they are certain ABILIFY does not affect them adversely.
